A BIT OF HISTORY

For much of Connecticut’s early history, Christmas passed almost unnoticed. The Puritans who settled towns like Litchfield considered the holiday a Catholic indulgence, not a holy day, and December 25 was treated as any other workday, sometimes even punished if celebrated too openly. Yet history has its quiet rebellions. In 1777, in the midst of the Revolutionary War, a captured Hessian soldier named Hendrick Roddemore is said to have erected one of Connecticut’s first Christmas trees in Windsor Locks, bringing Old World tradition into a place that had long resisted it. Nearly seventy years later, the tide fully turned: in 1846, Connecticut officially recognized Christmas as a state holiday. What began as a suppressed custom slowly rooted itself first in private acts, then in public life, until it became part of the winter rhythm we now treasure.
