When 30 Degrees Feels Like a Gift

February is warming up, just a little, and it feels so good. The light is brighter, the air softer, and somehow 30 degrees suddenly feels like a gift.

This is the last stretch of true winter: fresh snow underfoot, skis humming, boards carving, the quiet broken only by wind and laughter. If you’ve been waiting to get out there, this is your moment. Go make it happen!

If not, that’s fine too. A crackling fire, the faint smell of woodsmoke, a warm mug in your hands, or a slow, peaceful walk with nothing but your thoughts and the sound of your boots on the ground.

Thanks for being here. If this little newsletter made you feel something, pass it along to a friend. And thank you, always, for reading.

WINTER SUN

How valuable it is in these short days,

threading through empty maple branches,

the lacy-needled sugar pines.

LOOK UP: ORION

On clear February nights in Litchfield, Orion rises early and pierces the sky. Face south just after sunset, and you will see him almost immediately. Three bright stars sit in a clean line, like a ladder rung frozen in place.

Let your eyes soften. Notice the contrast. The warm, amber glow of Betelgeuse at his shoulder. The cool, blue-white shine of Rigel at his foot. Between them, Orion’s belt leads your gaze downward to a faint, misty blur. A place where stars are still being born.

This is one of the easiest constellations to see, even if you have never looked for one before.

How to see it:
• Go outside between 7:00 and 9:00 PM
• Face south
• Look for three evenly spaced stars in a straight line
• Give your eyes a minute to adjust. Do not rush.
